The relation between time, information and workInformation (as one of the critical resources) is to a business process what blood is to a body. Similar to operating with other resources, distributing information can be subject to certain rules which, to a large extent, determine whether the associated information-driven process will be effective or not.

What can I do to say less and achieve more?

In order to initiate, modify or terminate a business process, transmission of information is needed.

Transmission requires a transmitter, a receiver and transmission time. In business, the action that fulfils the purpose of transiting information is communication. Communication can be defined as Message Sent, Message Received and Message acted upon. Communication is a power line to any information-enabled system, process or task. Making some of the words, used in this article, commonly understandable, we introduce here the following terminology:

  • System is a platform for dispatching processes
  • Process is a change from one state of a system to another
  • Process is a carrier of tasks
  • Task is a unit of activity within a process

With respect to the above definitions, the principle of an information enabled system could be described as follows:

Info & time are distributed throughout a system by means of a process (according to procedures) in order to provide a task (namely a task stakeholder) with info & time to enable a task stakeholder to make decisions/choices/feedback & perform a task to the best collateral circumstances possible.

The blue line indicates gradual materialisation of a plan as an executive process. The process is divided into stages and materialisation levels, each accomplished by achieving one of the tactical objectives. Information links between the central planning and the process stakeholders in this case are the important enablers of the process.
